How Much Data Does Streaming Actually Use? Per-Resolution Numbers Measured, Not Estimated

We streamed one hour at every resolution tier on a metered connection and logged the bytes. The gaps between services — and the settings that cut usage 60% — are bigger than advertised.

Every service publishes “data saver” claims in vague terms. We measured actual bytes transferred during one full hour of playback at each quality tier, on a real 4G connection, on a mid-range phone — the setup most capped-data users actually have.

Measured Data Per Hour (4G, 2026)

Quality │ Service avg │ Efficient svc │ Hungry svc │ Delta
──────────┼─────────────┼───────────────┼────────────┼───────
144p │ 0.15 GB │ 0.11 GB │ 0.21 GB │ ~2×
240p │ 0.28 GB │ 0.22 GB │ 0.38 GB │ ~1.7×
360p │ 0.55 GB │ 0.41 GB │ 0.72 GB │ ~1.8×
480p │ 0.90 GB │ 0.68 GB │ 1.20 GB │ ~1.8×
720p │ 1.60 GB │ 1.15 GB │ 2.30 GB │ ~2×
1080p │ 3.10 GB │ 2.20 GB │ 4.40 GB │ ~2×
4K │ 8.50 GB │ 5.80 GB │ 12.60 GB │ ~2.2×

The same resolution label can mean wildly different bitrates between services — some platforms genuinely stream “1080p” at 6Mbps while others push 12Mbps. The label on the quality picker is marketing; the bits are physics.

The 60% Reduction That’s Invisible

Three settings combined cut our measured consumption by ~60% with no perceptible quality change on a 6-inch screen:

1. Cap at 720p — not 1080p

On a 6” phone screen at normal viewing distance, 720p and 1080p are indistinguishable in blind tests. The 1080p stream costs 94% more data for detail the display physically can’t render.

2. Prefer AV1/VP9 delivery when offered

Services that support AV1 or VP9 deliver equivalent quality at 20–30% fewer bits. If your app exposes codec selection (or the service defaults to modern codecs on your device), you inherit the savings automatically.

3. Kill “autoplay next” and background pre-buffering

Autoplay counts toward your cap even when you’re not watching — a stray 10 minutes of auto-played content per session is ~1GB/month of waste on a daily commute habit.

What 10GB Actually Buys You

10GB data plan, realistic watching:
480p: ~11 hours (commute week, covered)
720p: ~6 hours (mixed use, tight)
1080p: ~3.2 hours (don't do this on capped data)
